Olympic Countdown: Discontinued Events

There are a few Olympic sports that have been discontinued that many Traceurs would enjoy watching or participating in. We already mentioned one great event in the Olympic Countdown, Standing Broad Jump. Like the Broad Jump was the Standing High Jump, where a competitor jumps as high is he can without a run up and must land on his feet without falling. From 1896 to 1932 they Olympic Games held the Rope Climb, which had athletes starting on the floor in a seated position and then racing to the top using only hands and arms. The rope varied from 25 to 48 feet over the years. The first Rope Climb in 1896 (see picture) only had two competitors reach the top.

This one might be a stretch but if you think Traceur's should know how to swim then this event was for you! Obstacle Race and Swimming was only held in 1900. This fun event had athletes racing over a pole, scramble over a row of boats, and then swim under the next row of boats. There were no indoor pools so they swam in a river. That would have been a fun one to watch!

More to come on the Olympics! Countdown: 12 Days!
